Alpha Medical Ventures, a portfolio company of European private equity firm Penta Investments, has acquired a 90% stake in Polish lab chain DD Lab. The investment is Alpha Medical's first opportunity in Poland and part of the company's strategy to become a market leader in the Central European nation of 38 million people. DD Lab's 10 facilities and annual revenue of €4 million make it the sixth-largest such business in Poland, boosting Alpha's total European market share as they plan to enter the Czech Republic in the near future.

J&T Group, one of the leading private equity firms in the Czech and Slovak Republics, has entered the highway toll business with an investment in Ibertax. J&T acquired a 10% stake in the electronic tolling services firm after acting as an advisor to help Ibertax parent, SkyToll, line up financing for their Slovakian project. J&T's investment will get Ibertax off the ground while it waits on promised bank loans from Postova Banka, Raiffeisenlandesbank, and Tatra Banka.

SkyEurope, the financially troubled Slovakian low-cost airline, has inked an investment deal with Austrian equity firm FOCUS Equity B.V. The deal provides an investment by FOCUS of up to EUR 16.5 million, conditional on several factors including SkyEurope's successful restructuring plan.

U.S. based Advent International is poised to complete a takeover of Central and Eastern European drug maker Ozone. The companies are now in the final talks that would give Advent, also the owner of LaborMed, full ownership of Ozone's product lines. The buyout offer had been accepted by Ozone earlier this month, giving control of the company's portfolio to LaborMed.

Central Europe's Penta Investments has successfully worked out an agreement to acquire Slovakian window maker Noves okna, s.r.o. The deal marks the second Penta acquisition in the window industry after completing a takeover of Okna Rabien, a Polish window producer. Details of the sale were not disclosed, but Penta plans to invest more than EUR 3 million in coming years to increase Noves' workforce and grow production.

Japan's SBI Holdings, Inc. has joined forced with the Hungarian state owned bank, Magyar Fejlesztesi Bank Zrt. (MFB) to set up a new Eastern European investment fund. Sixty percent of the EUR 100 million fund will be held by SBI, MFB holding the remaining forty percent. The action comes on the heels of the global financial crisis making its way through the Eastern European region. The company plans to invest in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, hoping for a return of as much as 20%.

Bancroft Private Equity, in a press release, has stated that it acquired a 94.36% share of Mraziarne a.s. Presov. Mraziarne a.s. Presov is the Slovakia-based producer of ice cream.

Arca Capital announced at the start of Q3 2008 that it had acquired a license from the Czech National Bank to establish a new investment fund. The fund was named Arca Capital CEE and is seeking investors willing to bring at least CZK 5 million to the table.

Flughafen Wien AG signed a contract for the purchase of the stake held by Penta Investments in KSC Holding a.s., which owns 66% of the shares in Košice Airport. The agreed transfer of the shares owned by Penta Investments will raise the stake owned by Flughofen Wien in KSC Holding a.s. to 81%. RZB holds the remaining 19% of the shares.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has committed EUR 12 million to Genesis Private Equity Fund II. The fund is managed by Genesis Capital Ltd. and seeks to invest in the development of low-to-medium sized private equity managers as well as find new ways to finance businesses and projects in the Czech and Slovak Republics. Further details of the transaction are not available.
